Jon Schmitt

My name is Jon Schmitt, and my life has been shaped by books. Some of my earliest memories are of reading books with my parents and I haven’t stopped reading since. When I was about eight or nine years old I got my first creative writing assignment in school and it lit up my brain like an actual lightbulb. In the time since I’ve been writing on and off, unfortunately, like so many writers, I let fear take hold and didn’t finish, didn’t publish, and didn’t believe in myself.

I accomplished a lot in that time, learned new things, met and married my wife, we have three kids and I couldn’t be happier. We decided to follow our dreams and with not much more than our stuff, we loaded up a trailer and our family (our dog included) in our SUV and came to California. With the amount of fear we have overcome in accomplishing this, I felt inspired to overcome my own fear and finally put fingers to the keyboard and write like I’ve been thinking about for years.

I started this portfolio to connect to the community of writers and readers out there and try to see what things I could learn, and hopefully teach along the way. I’ll be sharing all of the ups and downs, trying not to highlight either and give you a false sense of hope or despair, in hopes that someone out there will be in the same place I was in before, and my story can somehow assist them along their journey. So if you’re out there reading this and you are afraid to do something you’re passionate about, let’s overcome it together!
